They argue about tactics and strategies while in the worst of imminent peril. The world is fairly well developed, and Nicholas, Madeline and Reynard come together as solid characters of long acquaintance. The connection isn’t immediately clear, but develops as an extra element of interest as the novel progresses. This is actually an extension of the story that took place in The Element of Fire, only we’ve skipped forward a number of years to a new generation of characters. Can Nicholas, Madeline and Reynard succeed in carrying out their plot against Count Montesq, or will they lose their souls in the attempt? Now it seems that some sorcery is opposing him, interfering with his plans. Nicholas’ beloved godfather Edouard was arrested and executed several years back for trumped up charges of Necromancy, and Nicholas has been working for years on an elaborately plotted scheme for revenge against Count Montesq, the responsible party. This includes the disgraced officer Reynard Morane and the actress Madeline. Nicholas Valiarde is a member of a noble family, now fallen, and is also the greatest thief in Ile-Rien, with several identities and a broad network of gang members and associates. It was reissued November 11, 2013, by Martha Wells, and runs 550 pages. This novel was first published in hardcover by Avon Eos in 1998, and was a nominee for the 1998 Nebula Award.
